If you happen to have seen Flo the Head Brewer today, you’ll have noticed him smiling a lot more than usual. That’s because yesterday he proudly collected three awards for Purity – one for each of the ales he and his team devotedly brew.
The awards were presented on Thursday 13th October by SIBA at their Midlands Beer Competition, which are as Charlie Gorham of SIBA puts it: “the equivalent of the Oscars for the UK beer industry”.
64 breweries entered ales and each category saw around 40 to 50 ales competing for the three medals. A collection of 95 judges drawn from across the industry including other brewers, local and national CAMRA, pub managers and consumers came together to blind taste the vast selection of regional beers, rating each one on its aroma, taste and appearance.
Purity entered all three of its ales and scooped:
- Bronze for Pure UBU in the ‘Premium Bitters’ category
- Silver for Mad Goose in the ‘Best Bitters’ category
- Gold for Pure Gold in the ‘Standard Bitters’ category
Flo was particularly pleased, explaining: “these awards mean a great deal to us. In the past year Ben, Ollie and Mark have joined the brewing team and these medals are a testament to their dedication to the quality and consistency of our ales. It’s a fantastic pat on the back for the whole team.”
Boss man Paul said: “the awards were judged by a mixture of key industry figures and consumers, so to have scooped a medal for each one of our ales is a huge complement and we are deeply honoured.”
Pure Gold will automatically go through to compete at the National Beer Competition in February. Keep those fingers and toes crossed for us.
